Eco Tourism / Environmental Policy

At Abhainn Ri Farm Cottages we are totally committed to operating our enterprise in a way that will offer an Eco friendly holiday and also maintain this wonderful environment in which we are located. We are committed to constantly looking at and reviewing the different ways that we and our guests can help reduce the use of energy, water and the amount of waste we produce.

At Abhainn Rí during construction the cottages were insulated to a very high standard and all windows and doors are double glazed.

The electricity used at Abhainn Ri is generated by a green energy provider that produces a minimum of 88% of its electricity from wind energy. Electricity is charged by meter reading on departure which helps us to monitor electricity usage and also makes our guests more aware of it usage.

In our wood burning stoves we use renewable & fallen timber collected from the farmland on site.

Our water is only the purest fresh from the ground provided by a well on site. This well is tested regularly and the quality of the water is of the highest standards. Our place name “Ballintober” translates to town with wells. So we have only the very best water used for many generations.

Our waste water is disposed of on site by an environmentally friendly treatment plant, the system uses no chemicals and uses peat moss and sea shells to purify and then discharge clean water.

We also try to limit the amount of cleaning products used and use environmentally friendly products where possible.

Where possible, CFL bulbs are being used and we have a policy of replacing bulbs with a more energy efficient equivalent as they become available. We actively encourage recycling.

We operate a system of segregation for all our waste. We give full information in our information folder on recycling to guests. Bins are clearly labelled for appropriate waste.

Our welcome packs are made up of traditional home-made breads and cakes and locally produced items where possible.

We have a wonderful selection of birds and we encourage them with winter feeders. We are located in a dedicated area for bird preservation. We have an abundance of wild animals rabbits, hares, foxes and squirrels.

The local bus to Dublin City Centre is only 5 mins drive away and we can pick people up and drop guests there if they want to use public transport. The Luas (Light Rail) is only 20 mins drive away and is ideal for City Centre day trips.

Our new website has a booking engine and which will allow not only for electronic booking but also booking confirmation, delivery of brochures and directions etc dispensing with the need for paper forms of this information. We also give clients the choice when making a booking to offset their carbon emissions for their journey.

We have a very comprehensive folder in each cottage detailing all local amenities and attractions to help support local employment and local craft workers.
